Raised metal beds: how to fill and insulate them correctly

Raised beds are a great way to grow vegetables, salads and herbs, especially if you have limited garden space or the soil quality in your garden is not ideal. Raised beds made of metal offer a particularly durable and stylish option. But how do you fill such a raised bed correctly and how do you insulate it so that your plants can thrive optimally? Find out everything you need to know here.

Filling a metal raised bed correctly

To ensure that your plants thrive in a raised metal bed, it is important to fill it correctly. The layers inside ensure an optimal supply of nutrients and a rich harvest. Here is a step-by-step guide:

The layers in the raised bed

  1. Layer: Branches, twigs or wood ch ippings This layer serves as drainage and ensures that excess water can drain away easily. Use branches, twigs or wood chippings for this. The layer should be around 25 to 30 centimetres high.

  2. Layer: Turned turf sod, leaves or grass clippings This layer consists of turned turf sod, leaves or grass clippings and should be around 15 to 20 centimetres high. It promotes the decomposition of the lower layer and ensures good aeration.

  3. Layer: Semi-ripe compost and possibly half-rotted manure This is followed by a layer of semi-ripe compost about 25 to 30 centimetres high. You can also add half-rotted horse manure or cattle manure to increase the nutrient content.

  4. Layer: High-quality garden soil and mature compost The top layer consists of high-quality garden soil, which you can improve with mature compost. This layer should also be around 25 to 30 centimetres high. Spread the substrate evenly and press it down lightly.

Why layer by layer?

The different organic materials in the layers start a rotting process that supplies your raised bed with nutrients for several years. This process also generates heat, which enables early sowing and leads to higher yields.

Note that the rotting process causes the filling in the raised bed to gradually shrink. You should therefore add some garden soil and compost every spring. After around five to seven years, the compostable parts inside the raised bed will have completely decomposed and broken down. You can use the resulting humus in your garden and then refill the raised bed.

Insulation of a raised metal bed

Metal raised beds offer many advantages, but they can conduct heat or cold quickly in extreme temperatures. Good insulation is therefore important to protect the roots of your plants and ensure optimum growth.

Steps for insulation

  1. Lining the inside Line the inside of the raised bed with bubble wrap or a special raised bed liner. These materials help to regulate the temperature inside the bed and protect the roots from extreme temperature fluctuations. Attach the foil carefully to the inner walls.

  2. Additional layer of insulation You can also add a layer of straw or leaves between the foil and the layers of the raised bed. This natural insulation ensures that the heat is kept inside and provides additional protection for the plant roots.

  3. Use a lid or cover Especially in the cold months, a cover made of garden fleece or a special lid can help to keep the heat in the raised bed. However, remove this cover on sunny days to prevent overheating.
